In a surprise development the New England Patriots have signed former NFL MVP quarterback Cam Newton, to an incentive laced one year contract worth up to $7.5 million.
Newton was released by the Panthers this offseason after playing only two games last year while battling a Lisfranc injury.
Everyone believed the Patriots would be giving 2nd year quarterback Jarrett Stidham his shot at taking over at quarterback after Tom Brady’s departure, but this certainly adds a new wrinkle to the story. Cam Newton will get every opportunity to compete, and the teams current offensive makeup could be built for him to thrive under Josh McDaniels. A battle will certainly be brewing in training camp.
One thing is for certain. Bill Belichick has no plans to tank, and any rebuild will be short lived.
For the #Patriots and Cam Newton, who have quietly worked on this recently, it’s a 1-year deal worth up to $7.5M, source said. https://t.co/YSHLAcRupb
